On a side note… the part where he’s talking about someone not being independent and calling all the time and driving you nuts… that resonated like you wouldn’t believe!

Heck, Bugaboo is pretty much my anthem!

As of the day after his rookie season ended, Sidney Crosby did not have a girlfriend. Although he did see a girl who worked as a lifeguard at a local pool in Rimouski during his first season there for about five months, hockey had occupied most of his time, and this season was no different. “That was the only long-term relationship I’ve really had,” he said with a smile. “It’s not something I’ve really had a lot of time for so far.”

Most of his socializing over the season was done with teammates - movies and trips to the mall with his closest friends Armstrong, Whitney, Talbot, Murley, and Christensen, dinners at Ryan Malone’s place, sometimes having the guys over to Mario’s. He went to see Bon Jovi at the Igloo and met the rock star afterwards, “a very cool moment.”

He hadn’t met a girlfriend during the season but hadn’t really tried either. “It’s really tough. It’s such a big city, and it depends where you want to meet your girlfriend.”

I asked if he spied the signs in the crowd. His eyebrows shot up and he laughed nervously. “Those aren’t girlfriend material! I don’t think I’m going to meet any of my girlfriends through signs in a hockey arena,” he said, turning sombre. “I’m a pretty picky guy. I’m picky about everything. Especially when it comes to something that affects your life. It’s like living with a family or choosing your friends. You want someone who complements you well. You want to be around good people and someone who influences you the right way. I don’t want to get married at a eighteen. If you’re a young person at a job, you don’t want to be preoccupied with other things. I’m preoccupied with hockey.

“I’m not saying I don’t want to meet girls. If the right one came along, I’d do it, but if it’s going to get me away from what I’m doing here, it’s not the right time.”

Sidney Crosby’s ideal girl is independent, upbeat, and athletic. “Independent is most important, because I’m so busy and I have a lot going on,” he said. “It doesn’t mean I don’t want to hear from them, but at the same time, they’d have to have some things going on, because if they didn’t, they’re going to be going nuts and I’m going to be nuts. For me, that’s the most important.”

Crosby wants to get married and have lots of kids; his mother came from a family of eight children. “I envision a big family supper at holidays. That was always a fun time for me. I see [Mario’s] four kids buzzing around all the time and it’s probably really tiring for Nathalie because he’s been on the road so much, but they play together and it’s really fun. I’m not looking for four kids of my own now, but down the road, yeah.”

It actually makes me feel so much better that his longest relationship is about the same length as mine!

Also it’s funny that his description of the perfect girl is exactly what I’m looking for in a guy! It’s surprising how few guys are independent… SO many are stage 5 clingers. The ones I attract, at least.

Anywhos, this whole thing has made me feel so much better. :)

Maybe I’m not crazy after all… just focused on what I want.

Let us learn to show friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead.
